A Brief History | A Distinguished Academic Legacy and a Strong Institutional Identity

The Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences stands among Türkiye’s long-established academic institutions in the fields of economics and administrative sciences, with an institutional history beginning in İzmir in 1944 and extending over more than eight decades. Its development is more than a sequence of structural and institutional changes; it represents the continuity of a strong academic tradition that has adapted to the transformation of higher education while educating generations of graduates for regional and national life.

Foundation and the Establishment of Academic Foundations | 1944-1959

The institutional foundations of the Faculty were laid with the establishment of the “Higher School of Economics and Commerce” in İzmir on 9 September 1944. Beginning its educational activities with 12 academic staff members and 392 students, the School developed as an important higher education institution responding to the growing need for education in economics and commerce.

Under Law No. 7334, enacted on 8 June 1959, the institution was granted the status of the “Academy of Economic and Commercial Sciences.” The same legislation extended the duration of study from three to four years. This transformation marked a significant milestone in strengthening the institution’s academic depth and institutional standing within higher education.

Institutional Consolidation and Integration into the University System | 1966-1969

As student numbers increased and the existing facilities became insufficient, the Academy began the 1966-1967 academic year in the building that today serves as the Rectorate of Dokuz Eylül University. During this period, its academic staff was also expanded.

In light of international developments in higher education and changing academic structures, the Academy was affiliated with Ege University under Law No. 1170 on 8 May 1969 and was renamed the “Faculty of Economics and Commercial Sciences.” This transition provided the institution with a broader academic framework within the university system and enabled it to continue its educational and scholarly activities under a new institutional structure.

Structural Transformation and Academic Expansion | 1978-1982

On 1 March 1978, the Faculty of Economics and Commercial Sciences was divided into two separate faculties: the Faculty of Business Administration and the Faculty of Economics. Both continued their educational activities in the same building. During this period, the Aydın School of Tourism and Hotel Management, the School of Marketing and Advertising, and the Manisa School of Finance and Accounting were affiliated with the Faculty of Business Administration, while the Buca Vocational School of Finance was affiliated with the Faculty of Economics.

On 20 July 1982, pursuant to Decree Law No. 41 on the Organization of Higher Education Institutions, the Faculties of Economics and Business Administration were reunified under the name “Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences” and affiliated with Dokuz Eylül University. This date represents a defining milestone in the formation of the Faculty’s present institutional identity and its position within the University.

Regional Academic Impact and Restructuring | 1982-1993

Under the same reorganization, the Muğla School of Business Administration, the Aydın School of Tourism and Hotel Management, and the Manisa School of Finance and Accounting continued their educational activities from 20 July 1982 as schools affiliated with the Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences. This structure reflects the Faculty’s academic influence beyond İzmir and its contribution to the expansion of higher education across the surrounding region.

On 18 June 1989, under Law No. 3389, the Manisa School of Finance and Accounting ceased to hold the status of an affiliated school and separated as the Dokuz Eylül University Manisa Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences. The Aydın School of Tourism and Hotel Management and the Muğla School of Business Administration continued their activities as affiliated schools until the end of 1992; the former was subsequently affiliated with Adnan Menderes University and the latter with Muğla University, and both separated from the Faculty as of 1 January 1993.

The Buca Campus and a New Academic Structure

The Faculty moved to its present campus in Buca on 1 October 1984 and has continued its educational activities there ever since. At the beginning of the 1993-1994 academic year, the English-medium programs in Business Administration, Economics, and International Relations were transferred to the newly established Faculty of Business Administration within Dokuz Eylül University. This restructuring marked an important institutional phase in which the Faculty’s departmental organization and academic priorities were reshaped in response to changing higher education needs.

Today: Strong Academic Capacity, a Large Student Community, and an Extensive Alumni Network

Today, the Faculty provides education to more than 7044 students in daytime and evening programs across seven departments: Labor Economics and Industrial Relations (Our department was accredited by star accreditation on March 11, 2026. We have an international internship program. Our other departments will be accredited in the near future). Econometrics, Economics, Business Administration, Public Administration, Public Finance, and Management Information Systems. With 153 academic staff members, the Faculty graduated 861 students in 2025-2026 and has educated more than 70,000 alumni since its establishment. Its graduates have contributed to a wide range of fields, from public institutions and the private sector to academia and entrepreneurship.

With institutional continuity extending from 1944 to the present, an academically dynamic structure capable of adapting to changes in higher education, an interdisciplinary profile, a large student community, and a strong alumni network, the Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences is not only a long-established educational institution but also one of İzmir’s and Türkiye’s distinguished academic brands in economics and administrative sciences. Its brand value is rooted in its historical legacy, the human capital it has cultivated, its institutional memory, its academic capacity, and an educational tradition sustained across generations.
