HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS

Dokuz Eylül University was founded on July 20, 1982. The “Higher School of Economics and Commerce”, which forms the basis of Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, was founded on September 9, 1944. The school, which started education with 12 faculty members and 392 students, was transformed into the “Academy of Economic and Commercial Sciences” with Law No. 7334 adopted on June 8, 1959, and the education period was increased from 3 to 4 years. Due to the increasing number of students and lack of buildings, the Academy started the 1966-1967 academic year in today’s Dokuz Eylül University Rectorate building and the faculty staff was expanded. Considering the international developments in higher education, on May 8, 1969, the Academy was affiliated with Ege University with Law No. 1170 and was named “Faculty of Economics and Commercial Sciences”. The number of students of the faculty has exceeded 6000, with the School of Economics and Commercial Sciences and the School of Journalism and Public Relations affiliated to it by a law passed in 1971.

The Faculty of Economics and Commercial Sciences was divided into two separate faculties as the Faculty of Business Administration and the Faculty of Economics on March 1, 1978, and while it continued its education in the same building, Aydın School of Tourism and Hotel Management, School of Marketing Advertising and Manisa School of Finance and Accounting were transferred to the Faculty of Business Administration, and Buca Vocational School of Finance was transferred to the Faculty of Economics. is connected. On July 20, 1982, with the Decree Law No. 41 on the Organization of Higher Education Institutions, two faculties (Economics and Business Administration) were merged and affiliated to Dokuz Eylül University under the name of “Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences”. Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences moved to its current buildings (Buca) on 1.10.1984, and at the beginning of the 1993-1994 academic year, the Departments of Business Administration (English), Economics (English) and International Relations (English) were transferred to Dokuz Eylül University. He transferred it to the established Faculty of Business Administration.

As of the 2023-2024 academic year, the Department of Economics continues its education and training activities with its faculty staff consisting of 9 Professors, 9 Associate Professors, 5 Assistant Professors and 3 Research Assistants.

Our aim is to cultivate economists committed to contributing to Turkey's sustainable development goals; who create value through education, research, and social interaction; who can develop approaches based on digitalization, artificial intelligence, and data analytics in the face of global economic transformations; and individuals with free thought, free conscience, and free wisdom.

Vision:
Our goal is to be one of the leading economics departments in Turkey and the world in terms of knowledge production at national and international levels, contributing to the efficient and effective use of national resources through scientific research, projects, and other academic activities; producing solutions to critical problems of our time, especially global economic vulnerabilities and social inequalities; and prioritizes data-driven approaches, advanced analytical methods, and especially AI-focused technological developments.

Program Educational Objectives:

Our graduates, with the title of economist, work in the following fields and positions:
PEO-1. They work as experts and auditors in public institutions, non-profit organizations, professional chambers, and trade unions.
PEO-2. They engage in financial reporting and auditing.
PEO-3. They are employed as experts in the analysis of data on economic and social variables in the public or private sector.
PEO-4. They take on roles as team members, researchers, experts, and managers in national and international project development activities.
PEO-5. They establish their own businesses or contribute to existing firms as entrepreneurs in various
fields of the economy.
PEO-6. They work as managers, specialists, and inspectors in the finance sector, primarily banking.
PEO-7. They are employed as researchers, specialists, and managers in agriculture, tourism, energy, foreign trade, press and publishing, and similar sectors.
PEO-8. As researchers, they contribute to the production of scientific knowledge and the solution of social problems in universities, national and international organizations.

Program Learning Outcomes:
PLO-1. Analyzes and critically evaluates the fundamental assumptions of economic theory and its micro and macro-level models at an advanced level.

PLO-2. Analyzes the history of economic thought and different schools of economics comparatively.
PLO-3. Effectively uses scientific research methods and terminology when analyzing economic phenomena.
PLO-4. Interprets and analyzes international economic systems and global trade relations within a cause-and-effect framework.
PLO-5. Evaluates the social, spatial, and environmental impacts of economic policies from an interdisciplinary perspective.
PLO-6. Analyzes and reports economic data using mathematical and econometric methods.
PLO-7. Analyzes products specific to the financial sector, including banking, insurance, and capital markets, within the framework of risk management approaches and current market dynamics.
PLO-8. Evaluates global risks and environmental economics policies in line with sustainable development goals..
PLO-9. Within the framework of international auditing standards, it analyzes financial statements by applying risk-focused auditing techniques and internal control mechanisms.
PLO-10. Evaluates corporate and individual economic processes from the perspective of fundamental legal disciplines; produces solutions in accordance with law, scientific and professional principles in academic and business life.
PLO-11. Uses information technology tools at an advanced level in economic analysis and decision- making processes, performs big data analysis by integrating open-source languages with emerging tools.
PLO-12. Uses emerging artificial intelligence tools, performs simulations with these tools, and utilizes decision support processes for economic reporting and scenario analysis.
PLO-13. Applies management standards for national and international projects.
PLO-14. Presents economic findings in written and oral form, independently or actively participating in a team.
